6 Months in San Francisco - Science and Scientists
SuperPowers for Electrical Engineers π¦Έπ»ββοΈπ¦ΈπΌββοΈ
π Hola Amigos! Dr. Molina here π¨βπ§
It's been six months since I arrived in the USA, and what I like most about this country is the little time wasted on bullshits. The cost of losing time doing things without value is too high. Here, it doesn't matter where you're from or the language you speak. What matters here is the value you contribute.
I spent the first month near the Netflix offices in Los Gatos and living in a house on a slope. Literally. To close the doors, we had to put some dumbbells that were in the house. Since the heating didn't work, the owner came to look at it and told us:
While we fix it, you can turn on the stove burners and turn on the extractor fan, that way the house will get warm.- The landlord
When we left, the Airbnb manager complained because we were very whiny and because we had moved the dumbbells.
One Sunday, we went to explore the Noe Valley neighborhood in San Francisco, and it became clear. Now, I'm in a WhatsApp group of parents called Parents in Noe Valley.
Sometimes, I'm scared of wishing for things...jaja.
San Francisco is the city of founders. In six months, I've met more than forty founders, and with all those I've spent more than an hour with, I've learned something, and above all, I've been able to see in them the determination to build incredible products.
A couple of weeks ago, I met Efren, a founder from Granada who sits next to me and who has just been accepted into Y Combinator. He's brilliant. Across the table is AndrΓ©s, a very smart Colombian who, if I leave my laptop unlocked, fills my browser with Nicolas Cage faces, and who is also the founder of a startup about AI. Indeed, if you're working on an AI project, you have to be in San Francisco. In the Startup HQ building, there are more than 70 startups with fewer than 5 employees, and 90% of them are AI-based products. They invoice hundreds of thousands of dollars and have fewer than 3 employees.
I'm learning a lot about AI, about the different layers, although the one that interests me the most is the Hardware for the technical side and for Frenetic, the model aspect. Honestly, if you're doing something with AI, this is the place you should be.
And without more bullshit, I will tell you three things:
1. Science and Magnetics
Years ago, we started the project to apply science to magnetics design, so I believe the time has come to share the science behind it. Our modeling team, led by Jonas, along with Lucas and Sheriff, has published an article explaining the accuracy of our thermal model.
Itβs hard to see how the theory doesnΒ΄t match the reality. Thatβs why magnetics are hard. Thatβs why I love this conjunction between software and hardware.
I am very proud of this work. Iβm proud of Jonas, Sheriff and Lucas.
2. MIT and Frenetic Community
In December, I saw a video on Youtube of John Kassakian from MIT giving a presentation at Princeton, and I thought, this guy is great, and I called him. The rest is history; next April 25th, an MIT Power Electronics professor will give a talk in our small Silicon Valley community.
I'm incredibly EXCITED about this event.
Failed until you make it.
We usually charge $10 to attendees, but in this case, we have decided to keep it open because everyone has the right to enjoy this talk.
We haven't decided yet if we will broadcast it online, but I will keep you updated depending on the number of requests.
3. Webinar about Core Losses by Jonas
Jonas is on fire. He has been working more than a year with us, but if we look at the amount of work created looks like a decade. He will give an online webinar about Effects with Considerable Impact on Core Losses.

A veces me da miedo desear cosasβ¦jajaja.
2. MIT y Frenetic
En Diciembre vi en un video de Youtube a John Kassakian from MIT giving a presentation in Princeton and I thought, this guy is great and I called him. The rest is history, next April 25th a MIT Power Electronics proffesor will give a talk in our small community of Silicon Valley.
