My vision of the future Power Electronics

I have spent most of the last 10 years thinking about how the world of power electronics will be in 20 years.

My first thoughts were about hardware technologies. I thought, the evolution of power electronics will come through new materials, new semiconductors, or maybe, completely different solutions to transform voltage and current to supply devices.

When We started Frenetic, we tried to create our own magnetic material. The goal was to have a custom permeability for using custom toroids (or ellipses) as core shapes. The toroid looks like the perfect core shape for a magnetic from a magnetic point of view. The way you can manage the magnetic flux, allows you to play with the leakage inductance easily and more efficiently. We wrote a patent about a numerical method of designing a magnetic.

We didn´t get granted with the patent and we didn´t solve the questions of the patent office, because we changed our minds.

I still think of toroids as the most interesting core shape for the magnetic flux, but I don´t think that will change the whole industry. Actually, I don´t think, any component independently will change the industry.

With the new semiconductors technologies in the market, I follow the evolution of the companies like EPC, Navitas, or GaNSystems and their referral designs, which looks impressive.

Nevertheless, when I watch at the industry I don´t see big changes due to the new semiconductors. Yes, they allow some new designs with their issues. Great technology but it is not a game changer.

And after all these years of waiting for a Hardware answer, I started looking for answers in Software. Artificial Intelligence and algorithms and I felt that by using smart software, we can improve the work. However, still, I was thinking, this is not what I’m looking for.

And suddenly, one day, I was walking through a new product definition, talking with my mates at work, and started drawing something that was inside of my heart for a long time.

A Game changer for the industry, only can be driven by the whole industry, changing the way we work.

We need to re-shape the whole Power Electronics Industry with new ways of working.

  • New ways of learning.

  • New ways of networking between us.

  • New ways of sharing what we do or protecting what we create.

  • The future is different, it’s online, and we all will be part of it.

  • Engineers will learn, and they won´t need a Ph.D. to know about Magnetics or EMI.

  • Consultants will be part of most projects.

  • Suppliers will be accessible in a few clicks.

  • Conferences will show actionable and verified work

I can´t see the future, but I can dream of it.

Here I disagree. We will get nowhere with the present state of affairs, with only a handful of people having a solid grasp of the basics, and the majority going by the seat of their pants or by questionable rules of thumb found on Youtube. There is an abyss between the experts that know all about the theory without being able to do a single experiment, and the practioners who can get to work anything, because they don't know it is theoretically impossible.

Agreed, and not only for magnetics.
