Last week I was invited to the International Research Meeting at ETSII -UPM, the engineering school where I did my Ph.D. to be part of a panel of entrepreneurs engineers.
One of the fun facts was, that I was wearing a cap, sneakers, and some fun socks, something unexpected for the engineers of this school. Most of the time, they relate CEOs of companies with suits and not with sports guys.
We discussed topics about creating companies after university and I’m very happy to see the evolution of the audience questions. The creation of technology companies could be a very common practice at Stanford, but I can ensure you, that it wasn´t common in Spain, until a few years ago.
The investment in Startups in Spain has increased dramatically in the last years. In the graph below you can appreciate the evolution.

The best news for Spanish startups is that Engineers have started to consider Startups as a preferred career path.
I remember when I started, engineers were afraid of working in startups, but today they really understand the benefits of their career working in startups. Specially:

No bureaucracy work
Access to latest technologies and specialist
Budget for your ideas
Stock Options (This one has been the most difficult one)
