If you are a Power Electronic engineer, a whole industry is looking for you. The industry is looking for engineers but also for artisans and innovators.

Today, the Power Electronics industry is led by the Electrification of the automotive industry. TIER1 corporates are looking for innovation in High-Frequency magnetics.

But these companies are too big, to follow the path of innovation established by small research companies.

In a series of articles, Forbes talks about how big corporates need innovation to survive and how partnering with startups could be a solution.

From my point of view, this kind of strong collaboration is extremely important for the corporates to continue innovating, of course, they will need internal research activities but it. would be very risky for the future.

The innovation in High-Frequency Magnetics is key for the Electric Vehicle industry, not only for the Onboard Chargers, where the Transformer is the key element but for the wall box chargers, where the magnetics are the complex and expensive element. In the last 10 years, experts have been studying different solutions, from new materials to different shapes. Nevertheless, the problem is to keep working blindfolded with respect to the physical predictions. (Rac, Core losses, temperature..).

Most brilliant solutions are not coming from a technological approach but from the results of artisans. Experts with deep know-how and experience, have been able to find winding strategy solutions for increasing the Leakage inductance in a transformer in a nonintuitive approach keeping winding losses under control. They are more artists than engineers.

Are there enough artists for all the companies in the market? I don´t think so. And what is worse. How can we keep all this knowledge once these artists pass away? Or we will only keep their pieces of art like Mozart's pieces and adapt their original solution to our specific case each time?
