👋 Hello! Dr. Molina here! 👨🔧
Power electronics engineers use the verb “Optimize” referred to magnetics to optimize:
Efficiency
Cost
Volume
Weight
However, instead of just focusing on these factors, I optimize the COMPLETE PROCESS… which means…
📝 Design Stage
📦 BOM selection
🛠 Tooling decisions
🚢 Production logistics
The main reason is, that we have discovered after some years of failing in the optimization, that was following an academic optimization, not an industrial optimization.
📝 The cost of the design phase is related to the engineering hours. Usually takes between 100-1000 hours of engineering, depending on the number of iterations. The impact on the final cost depends on the accuracy of your design.
📦 The BOM selection for a MOQ of 1000 units, can have an impact on the final unitary cost of 500%. If you select a material that is located in East China, the cost is infinite, because you are losing your customer.
🛠 The tooling creation is an art. If you optimize the design, to be manufactured easily by known toolings, you can save up to $20k in total. Special toolings are very expensive and the manufacturer will charge you the cost of each unit.
🚢 The logistics:
Cores in China (100 kg),
Coils in Poland (10 kg),
Wires in the UK (300 kg),
winding factory in Taiwan
Final destination: Minessota (USA).
Make your numbers.
Conclusion:
First, review off-the-shelf components before customizing your design. We are building a library of great off-the-shelf designs. If you don´t find it, design with all the previous aspects in your mind.
By the way, today we are starting a Training where you can use our online simulator for one month and learn about Process Optimization.

✅ If you want to optimize the complete process, You are Frenetic.

Definitively true... When considering optimization of a magnetic, you have to consider the advantages and disadvantages of the entire picture, not only the component factors.
